Nine

"Movie director Guido Contini (Daniel Day-Lewis) is in the throes of a midlife crisis, struggling to write his film while juggling relationships with wife Luisa (Marion Cotillard), mistress Carla (Oscar nominee Penélope Cruz), muse Claudia (Nicole Kidman), costumer Lilli (Judi Dench) and his mother (Sophia Loren). Rob Marshall (Chicago) helms this Golden Globe-nominated musical based on the Broadway smash; Stacy Ferguson and Kate Hudson co-star." courtesy of netflix

I watched this movie solely for the fact that the trailer made it look really good. However, I got bored and found myself fast-forwarding through scenes and then eventually just turned the whole thing off. I think because its a musical thats where I was lost, I feel like the underlying story is good but there was a lack of urgency, a lack of "i have to find out what happens next" which is why I ended up turning it off. HOWEVER some of the songs/choreography was amazing, the cinematography is beautiful and the characters and the women are stunning and as much as I usually don't like Penelope Cruz - she was sexy in this movie, in a way that everyone could appreciate. If you like musicals, I would recommend it. I'm not completely against musicals, I have liked a few "musicals" (Moulin Rouge, Phantom of the Opera) but thats it.

  1. Nine is very much like All That Jazz. One was a self indulgent autobiograph of a character representing Frederico Fellini and the other of a character representing Bob Fosse.

You have to accept the introspective egoiste premise to slog through the movie.

I loved both for the music, and found the plot weak and boring.

But the music propped it up.

Check out All That Jazz some time. Bob Fosse, however flawed as a human being, was a genius. Some of our best genius springs from a damaged psyche.

  2. without looking it up - All That Jazz is black and white or at least on the verge of that breakout, right?

i think if i liked musicals then i would have liked it more but there was just a disconnect with me.

  3. All that Jazz came out in 1979...we'd had color movies for a lot longer than that, young'un! LOL
