Rachel Getting Married

"Longstanding family conflicts resurface when drama queen Kym (Anne Hathaway, in her first Oscar-nominated role), a former model who's been in and out of rehab for 10 years, returns to her parents' home just before her sister Rachel's (Rosemarie DeWitt) wedding. Debra Winger co-stars as the girls' emotionally distant mother in director Jonathan Demme's critically acclaimed portrait of family angst and unrest." courtesy of netflix

I heard this movie was great but I could tell it was something I had to be in a mood in to watch so I had always put it off and I watched it today, mid-way through I did feel a little ADD and wanted to turn it off and return to it later but my mom wanted to keep watching so we did. its a very sad movie, not in an emotional way. I'm not sure if it actually is a Sundance movie but it is shot that way, which I love and hate at the same time, Sundance movies (and this movie) tend to leave it up to you to piece certain things together. but Anne Hathaway did do a great job regardless. I wouldn't watch it twice, but would you ever watch 'Schindlers List' twice?

  1. I know what you mean about not watching it twice, but the truth is you almost need to watch it twice i think. It's disturbing but so real life that you don't grasp it all in one sitting. There are many small nuances and subtleties. for example, at the end of the movie after Ann Hathaway is finally leaving after the wedding and her new bride sister sees her off as her sister is driving away the sister leaps and slaps the top of the doorjamb as she walks away, and there is jubilation in that leap and total relief that the sister has left. Many folks would miss it.

P.S. i did watch Schindler's List twice and actually truly loved it for the perfect movie that it was the second time around.

  2. yeah i could see that, I think in a lot of movies you need to watch it more than once to get every concept. you know another movie that is like that? 'Fight Club' that movie you HAVE to watch more than once

Yano, I didnt notice the little jubilation jump by the sister, so you are right.

well, actually I have never watched schindlers list but I took a cinema class at Pierce and we studied it. watched a few scenes. did you know spielberg refused to be paid for the movie? and any money that was like technilcilty (he had to be paid) went to charity i'm almost postive something in relation to nazi's and such. (obviously not supporting them lol)

  3. How can you study a movie without actually watching it?

As excruciating as it was, Schindler's List was an experience not to be missed. Not just as craft, but as a proxy for history.

Spielberg's earnings from the film, including residuals, go to the Shoah Foundation. It preserves testimonies from survivors of genocide everywhere, not just the Holocaust.

  4. haha i know it sounds weird. this was for a project and we broke up into pairs and watched the movie we were assigned and did a report on it, but schindlers list our teacher went with later that week and we studied what the story was, we did watch some clips but it was more about the story and how spielberg didnt take any earnings. which i thought was really cool.

most movies in that class we actually watched either in class or as homework. it was a very cool class.
